So here we are.. Take a knee, we’ve got a lot to talk about.

 

Truth be told, I’m not a very skilled writer. 

I use images and designs to reflect my thoughts, feelings and emotions because I feel that my words don’t do them justice. So what’s the big deal? If I can successfully use art as a representation (or extension) of myself, why bother with writing? Wouldn’t it make more sense to just focus on producing more images and designs?

Yes and No. Sure I want to create more art, what artist doesn’t, but I also want to grow in the areas where I feel I’m lacking- especially if it means giving more meaning to my work (even if its only purpose is for my own understanding and reflection).

I used to believe that images should stand totally alone (with the exception of a title) and that accompianing text detracted from the overall meaning.. And I guess to some degree I still believe that, however I think that an artist should do whatever it takes to challenge the viewer to think back on their own life. Not only does that help the work be remembered, but it also helps reinforce the value of the piece.

If the image alone strikes a chord to the viewer, job well done, but for some it takes more than just looking at a photo/design to feel connected to the piece. Words help to contextualize the aesthetics hopefully moving the viewer past the physical subject matter and onto looking at their own existence. And hell, if all else fails, words can be a minimal crutch to help them to make up a story that will somehow bring them a sense of entertainment.

To get into the boring geeky bits of it- (feel free to blow past this if you’re in a time crunch): Take the top left image titled Hint of Lavender- for example, it’s really a pretty basic image and I haven’t edited in the slightest but by pairing it with a not-so-obvious title I’ve attempted to trick the senses of my audience (and even myself) to get them to mull over the meaning.

“Was it a smell of lavender that made her take this photo? Is there lavender in the image somewhere?” Then you get the thought about how lavender relates to their life- “Grandma loved lavender..” and boom, there’s your connection. It keeps them looking at the image, rather than just scrolling past it.

Geekiness aside- learning more about creative writing will help me to become a better blogger but more importantly, it will help me with my creative processes. 

With all of that now simmering in the back of your mind (hopefully I didn’t scramble your brain too much.. I may have whipped mine too hard)- I think it’s a good time to transition into some of the things I’ve been up to lately. I’ve begun creating a new brand (which will hopefully be launched by the new year- but that’s a very optimistic idea). I feel this new brand will be familiar enough, yet it’s one which will incorporate what I do more fully than simply saying “Haley Frost Photography & Design”.

I really liked my old logo, but I don’t feel that it truly represents who I am outside of fashion photography- not to mention the design flaws I feel stand out pretty heavily.

This time around, I spent more time researching how brand identity functions before I started designing. I focused on what makes me who I am rather than what I thought looked the most like a statement. I asked myself a lot of questions and what I found was that I needed a brand identity that is as versatile as I am. I finally came up with the above design after many failed attempts with other logos (that were actually pretty cool). The reason I decided to use “Haley Frost Creative” was because it’s wide open so that I can incorporate other aspects without rebranding everything…again. 

It was so liberating to create something that I felt represented me, in all aspects of myself.

I had a blast working with them, they were super flexible, stood out in the frigid air (the night of a show) and didn’t complain once! Can’t wait til spring/summer to work with them again. 

The last thing I wanted to get into before I wrap this up (which has nothing to do with the client above, though I realize the placement of this section of the post wasn’t as ideal as I would have liked-sorry guys! ) was a really common question that I get asked from photographers who are just getting on their feet- “Do you get paid before you shoot, or after when the images are done?”.  That’s a hard question to answer sometimes, especially when you see the good in people and instinctually trust them.

That’s a nice gesture, but don’t I’ve recently been burned on a project that I worked my ass off on, and have yet to be paid for.. It’s not a good feeling when the client receives all of their files, and weeks go buy without getting paid. It might seem like an insignificant amount, but we depend on that money. We (as freelance artists) expect that if we’re professional, you better damn well be too. Especially when my images bring you business.

    I’m a full-time headshot and commercial photographer so I rarely get the chance to pair any text with my images as they’re used by clients. I do blog weekly and put up plenty of words, but they don’t go with any individual photos. Rather, I use the photos to illustrate the stories I tell with words.

    Oh, branding. What fun. I’m lucky to have chosen my two niches as they fit on a business card: “Tyler [name redacted for SEO] / Headshot and Commercial Photographer”. Sure, I’ll shoot senior portraits if I someone asks. Yes, I do magazine work on the side. But those two genres encompass the majority of my work, and what I want to be known for, so I can keep it simple. As always, branding is so much more than a nice logo. I don’t even have one. It’s about how you answer your phone, dress for work, write your blog posts. But you seem to know that already.

    I once pestered a company for four months until they finally sent my paycheck. I do have two clients who I trust to pay me after the shoot, but for the rest I charge 50% before the shoot…and then don’t give them a license to use the photos until I’ve been paid in full. That helps them get a move on. 🙂
